Eve volunteers with Pathways as a telephone befriender. She comes from Sheffield and currently works part-time as a learning disability Nurse. She lives in Chesterfield with her husband and their dog Lulu and has three adult children. Eve got involved with Pathways after a Pathways representative at her WI group talked about the services we provide for our clients. She saw that we were asking for volunteers on Facebook and applied. Eve says she was “was looking for something worthwhile to do with my extra time as I cut back on my work hours as an LD Nurse. I knew I wanted to continue working with people and giving back as I understood something of what it’s like to live through tough times. It does have a positive effect on your own mental health giving your time helping others – gives you a sense of purpose. But the main focus is the client their needs and progress -I just wanted to offer my support and be involved in this local charity/organisation”.
Eves role as a telephone befriender involves having a friendly chat with clients over the phone on a weekly basis. She says often our cleints are lonely and or socially isolated, especially during these difficult times. Her role offers friendship and support and can make a valuable connection with our clients. When Eve first joined Pathways 2020 she helped out with outreach. About this role she said “meeting clients face to face I had mixed feelings at first – just the thought of approaching strangers really – but I was with a regular member of staff at all times, who knew the clients by name so was an enjoyable experience and they were a friendly bunch! All the staff are friendly and welcoming – You feel part of the team”. Eve would love to expand her role when the opportunity arises and do more to support Pathways. She says Pathways has a great person centred approach to their service for helping the homeless.
Here is what our volunteer coordinator Claire had to say about Eve:
“Eve is a valued member of our volunteering team, she is always eager to help, get involved and she has a huge heart! Eve really wants to make a difference in our community. Eve is one of our founding telephone befrienders and we know that we can link Eve to some of our more complex clients as she has the skills and experience to deal with any issues that may arise. Eve’s commitment to helping others whilst on outreach was inspiring, she has a lovely way of conversing with others and makes each person feel valued. Eve has worked with most of the staff at Pathways, all of whom enjoy her company and really appreciate her contribution”.
Everyone at Pathways would like to thank Eve for her hard work and commitment to Pathways and our clients.
