Spotlight on Staff- Shaun Barnett
Shaun Barnett, Housing Worker
Shaun attends church regularly, and in his own words he ‘loves the Lord Jesus Christ’ He keeps tropical fish and enjoys riding his motorbike!
Shaun used to volunteer at a church soup kitchen where he got to befriend many homeless people in Chesterfield. In his spare time, he helped a few of the homeless gain accommodation by applying to Chesterfield Borough Council and this gave him some valuable experience for his current role at Pathways.
Shaun has been a housing worker for nearly 3 years. His role involves making referrals to various local councils, supported living accommodation providers and private property owners to secure accommodation for people who are homeless or are vulnerable of being so. Shaun guides, helps, and navigates people through what can be an incredibly stressful time. Some of his duties include applying for grants for rent in advance\bond monies, applying for benefits such as Universal Credit accounts, PIP applications and Derbyshire discretionary grants. Shaun is a vital member of our drop-in and outreach team, where he gives out sleeping bags, food, clothes and other supplies to people in need.
Shaun directs people into further education and where necessary will make referrals for people who would like help with their mental health and substance misuse issues. He encourages individuals to join our groups here at Pathways too for their well-being.
We asked Shaun what he likes about working at Pathways, this is what he said:
“I love housing people, giving someone a home is something that I like most of all. Working at Pathways is the best job that I have ever had, it’s like being paid to do something that I would do for free (please don’t tell my boss lol). This is my dream job.”
Nicky Ware, Housing Manager said of Shaun:
”Shaun has worked for Pathways for nearly three years now and is a positive, valued member of the housing team. He has a great sense of humour and always brightens our day. He is committed and passionate about supporting clients to source accommodation and live independently and is always willing to help others in any way he can. We would like to thank Shaun for all his hard work whilst working with us at Pathways.“
