The event started off slowly, but then all of a sudden we were full—bums on seats, Christmas meals ready, and smiles all around. The games went brilliantly too, with lots of banter, laughter, and yes… a few tears. We know how particularly hard Christmas can be for those without a home or loved ones.
So many of us take for granted the presents under the tree, food on the table, the thermostat we switch on and off when we need to, a warm duvet, and the gift of family around us. For the people we welcomed, these things aren’t a given. But for a few precious hours, we did what we could. They were treated with dignity and care, and they left with full hearts, presents and chocolates in hand.
One lady arrived so cold she was in pain; after a warm meal, time, and care, she began to giggle and enjoy the company, the warmth, and a game of bingo. Moments like that remind us why we do this.
