Michelle’s story is a powerful reminder of just how life-changing the right support can be.
At 48, Michelle came to Pathways in April 2025 after making the brave decision to leave an abusive marriage. She left everything behind to find safety. Years of abuse, combined with the loss of her mum, left her isolated and deeply dependent on her partner, whose control over her life continued to grow.
From the moment she reached out, Pathways has been there every step of the way.
We supported Michelle into safe accommodation and helped her begin rebuilding her life. Although her journey hasn’t been straightforward—she briefly returned to her husband after he used emotional blackmail—she found the strength to come back. With our support, further housing was secured and her recovery journey continued.
Alongside this, Michelle has faced a lifelong struggle with alcohol dependency, using it as a way to cope with trauma from both her childhood and her relationships. Recently, after waking up covered in horrific bruises, she reached a turning point.
With support from Paul, our recovery worker, Michelle made a life-changing decision. She told us:
“He gave me the kick up the backside I needed.”
“I absolutely knew that I was at that stage where it could go either way.”
“I said, right I am stopping now! I said now—and I have done it.”
Since then, Michelle has stopped drinking. She feels clear-headed and hasn’t experienced withdrawals, but she is honest about the challenges ahead:
“I’m scared of the weekends when you aren’t open and when drinking is socially the thing to do.”
Now, Michelle is fully embracing the support Pathways offers. She is attending our activity groups, engaging with others, and working closely with our counsellor to process her experiences and build a healthier future. She is throwing herself into Pathways and making sure she stays on the right trajectory.
She shared just how important this support has been:
“If I didn’t have this place to come to, I would have nothing.”
“This place has kept me alive.”
Michelle has lived in Chesterfield for 10 years and has no strong support network—but through Pathways, she is no longer facing things alone.
Her journey isn’t over, but she is now building a life free from abuse and alcohol. With determination, honesty, and the right support around her, Michelle is discovering a new version of herself—and a future full of possibility.
