Homelessness: What We Think vs. What’s Real 🏠✨

When we talk about homelessness, perception often doesn’t match reality.

Many people believe it’s a choice—or that homelessness only means sleeping rough on the streets. But the truth is far more complex.

The Misconceptions:
• Some think people choose to be homeless. In reality, most are facing challenges beyond their control—like job loss, mental health issues, or lack of affordable housing.
• We tend to picture homelessness as someone sleeping outside. But “hidden homelessness”—like crashing on a friend’s sofa or living in temporary housing—is far more common.
• Many misestimate how many people are homeless, but underestimate how deep and widespread the issue really is.

The Reality:
Homelessness isn’t caused by one thing—it’s a mix of personal hardship and systemic issues. Mental health, substance use, poverty, and a lack of affordable private rentals. And while some people are visible on the streets, countless others remain unseen living in cars, B&B‘s, or staying temporarily with others.

So how do we close the gap between perception and truth?
• By listening, learning, and challenging assumptions
• By supporting person-centred services that treat people with dignity
• By pushing for real, research-backed solutions

Understanding is the first step toward change. 💛
